Animals, Wappu and being happy!
Hei! During these weeks it is time for all the deadlines and exams on school, people who are going back to their own country and it is also time for Wappu. Oulun Kärpät (Ice hockey team of Oulu) became champion last weekend, Kingsday in the Netherlands was also celebrated wild and my sister got his drivers license! The only thing I need now is: Holiday... However, life goes on and my blog as well.

Nepal is nog aan het nabeven van de aardbeving, wat was dat toch weer een nieuws afgelopen week. Mijn tutor student is ook van Nepalese afkomst en hier in Oulu zitten aardig wat internationale studenten die uit Nepal komen. Er wordt dus overal geld ingezameld om de mensen te hulp te schieten in Nepal. Mooi om te zien!
Zoals de oude Hawaiianen altijd zeiden: "De mooiste dingen in het leven kun je niet zien, alleen maar voelen in je hart". Toch wel weer een mooie wijsheid die past bij deze week.
Het is reeds 29 april 2015, dat betekent dat het 2 dagen na Koningsdag is en dat betekent ook dat er nog een maand te gaan is voor mij hier in het zonnige Finland. Kan ik tot nu toe concluderen dat de tijd snel is gegaan in de afgelopen 4 maanden? Dat weet ik wel zeker! Maar dat betekent ook dat ik plezier heb gehad in mijn tijd hier in Finland. Daar gaan we nu niet over praten, we gaan over naar dit mooi moment, tijd om verder te gaan naar vorige week donderdag.
23 april 2015, bijkomend van de karaoke bar, de dag waarop mijn broer alweer 28 jaar werd. In de ochtend begonnen we met de was, die ook nog gewoon iedere week gedaan moet worden. Vervolgens was het tijd om naar school te gaan, lekker lunchen en op naar huis om eerst even bij te komen van de avond van te voren. Vervolgens was het tijd voor school om nog veel af te maken, dat hoort er dan ook weer bij. Verder was de dag niet zo heel bijzonder.
In tegenstelling tot de vrijdag, 24 april 2015. Vrijdag begon de dag vroeg, met school in de eerste uren van de dag. Scheelt dat hier de zon iedere dag om 5 uur op gaat en dat ik daar vaak wakker van wordt. Het was tijd voor school, en na dat, snel lunchen, vliegend naar huis en op naar het roeien. Nee, niet om zelf te gaan roeien, maar gewoon om lekker toe te kijken en te feesten. Waarom ik niet ging roeien? Het sneeuwde uiteraard in Oulu, waarom ook niet op het einde april. Maar goed, het was gezellig en het was leuk en daar gaat het eindelijk om. Vervolgens kwam overigens wel de zon weer, het weer in Finland is heel raar. Daarna was het alleen nog maar genieten van de zon. Balkonnetje, patches gaan naaien op mijn overal die maar blijven toestromen en vervolgens wat het tijd om los te gaan. Eerst hamburgers maken en dan de ijshockey wedstrijd kijken. Het principe hier in ijshockey is dat de twee beste in de competitie 7 wedstrijden tegen elkaar spelen om kampioen te kunnen worden (best out of 7). Vóór de wedstrijd stond het 3-2 voor Oulun Kärpät en wanneer ze zouden winnen, werden ze kampioen. Na een een spannende wedstrijd verloren ze en moesten ze het zaterdag af gaan maken. Niet getreurd, op de vrijdagavond was een prima feestje in een gezellige tent!
De zaterdag was het weer tijd om vroeg op te staan. Zaterdag 25 april, tijd om naar Ranua te gaan. Ranua is een plaatsje dat noordelijker licht ten opzichte van Oulu. In Ranua is een Wildlife Park gelegen, dat beschikt over dieren die vereenzaamt zijn geweest. Onderweg kwamen we veel rendieren op straat tegen, volgens mij zijn ze uit hun winterslaap... Opvallend was dat het onderweg weer aan het sneeuwen was. Gelukkig toen we aankwamen bij het Wildlife Park scheen de hele dag de zon en konden we genieten van het park. Er waren ijsberen, bruine beren, roofvogels, muizen, wolven, rendieren, vossen en nog wat andere dieren. Een belangrijk dier voor mijn studiegenootje hier was een eland. Het was een gezellig dagje. Biertje erbij en weer terug voor de twee uur durende busreis. Vervolgens was het tijd om de finale van de finale te gaan kijken van het ijshockey. Eerst bij iemand anders in de kamer, vervolgens gezamenlijk onder. In normale speeltijd was de stand gelijk en dus moest er 'overtime' worden gespeeld. De eerste die een doelpunt maakt, die wint, heel simpel. Bij de Finnen was de spanning niet te houden en dus moest er meer gedronken worden. Iedereen had de televisie inmiddels verlaten (spanning denk ik), maar op dat moment scoorde Oulu het winnende doelpunt. Een 17-jarige gozer nog wel, die ook in de nationale selectie zit. Het werd uitbundig gevierd, op z'n Fins dan wel. Vervolgens zijn we naar de stad geweest om het met z'n allen te vieren. Het vreemde is dat je hier overal gewoon je eigen bier enzo mee kunt nemen. In Nederland is altijd overal alles georganiseerd en zijn er horeca ondernemers die er nog eens geld aan verdienen. Hier dus niet. Maar goed, na het feestje hebben we een stuk pizza gegeten en zijn we naar het feest geweest dat er die avond was. Ik was blij dat ze daar oordoppen hadden liggen, man man man. Die muziek was gewoon kei hard, maar wel gaaf. Ik snap alleen het principe niet dat mensen de polonaise gaan lopen op Hardstyle?!
Zondag was het tijd om weer even heerlijk uit te slapen. Vervolgens eieren maken en gaan werken aan school op z'n tijd. Ondertussen ook de gewoonlijke voetbalwedstrijden volgen, die uiteindelijk zorgen voor studievertraging. Daarna wederom eten maken, terwijl anderen naar de burgertent gingen. Helaas, studie gaat voor. Toen ik eindelijk klaar was, kon ik de sauna in en konden we een film gaan kijken. Prima zondag, net zoals iedere week.
De maandag begon weer volle bak met school. Achja, nog maar een paar kleine weken en dan hebben we even rust. Een aantal vergaderingen en wat les, daarna nog lekker doorwerken op school en de dag is alweer voorbij. Naar de supermarkt en verder gaan voor een uurtje. Rond een uur of 6 gingen we alweer naar de stad om het kampioenschap te vieren van Oulun Kärpät. Het is een groot verschil van vieren vergeleken met Nederland. Dit was denk ik een van de momenten waarbij je wederom wel een kleine cultuurshock hebt, absurd. Bij het vieren was misschien de vooract nog wel het leukste, daarna was het een beetje vreemd. Ook de muziek keuzes waren niet om over naar huis te schrijven. Normaal zijn het kampioensnummers, maar nu waren het gewoon random Finse nummers, heel vreemd. En dan het vuurwerk, waarbij de zon volop scheen en er weinig van te zien was. Beetje jammer. Het leuke was wel dat er overal Finse vlaggen van het vuurwerk afkwamen, hangend aan een parachute. Na de huldiging was het tijd om rustig aan te doen en koffie te drinken, de volgende dag was een interessante dag.
Het belangrijkste van de dag was de was, denk ik zo. Nee, de dag startte wel met de was. Daarna was het een kwestie van voorbereiden en opmaken voor de presentatie van ons business plan. Geheel voorbereid komen we de klas binnen en de lerares blijkt er niet te zijn. Hoe kan dat? Geheel Fins, maar zij had dus meerdere dingen door elkaar. Een klein kwartier later konden we dan toch gaan presenteren. Het ging gewoon goed :) Daarna snel naar de supermarkt, naar huis en vervolgens naar Antell om een bedrijfsbezoek te doen over het Human Resource Management. Antell is een Fins bedrijf dat verspreidt ligt over heel Finland en het gaat met name om de bakkerij. Ze hebben ook café's, restaurantjes et cetera, maar hier in Oulu ligt meer een fabriek. Geheel in stijl komen we bij het bedrijf aan. Daar werden we door de CEO ontvangen. Hele aardige man. Het kantoor was ook heel mooi aangekleed, het was een echt familiebedrijf en dat zag je ook terug in de stijl van het kantoor/vergaderzaal, whatever. Er was een koekoeksklok, ouder meubilair, en dat alles was weer modern gecombineerd. We werden daar ontvangen met heerlijk aardbei gebak en vers fruit, en uiteraard koffie. Mooi bedrijf, waar het met name ging over leiderschap. Vervolgens was het tijd om terug te gaan en beginnen met het feest. Het was middag, maar we zaten heerlijk in de zon. Traditiegetrouw is hier ieder jaar Wappu. Wappu is een week of net iets langer alleen maar feesten. Hierbij wordt er vanallerlei feesten gekke dingen georganiseerd, alle Finnen hier zijn er helemaal weg van. Dinsdag was het dus tijd voor de studenten van Engineering. Zij brengen ieder jaar een sauna vanuit het centrum naar ons studentengebouw om vanuit hier te feesten. Geweldige traditie. Het was dus een prima feestje, dat vervolgens door ging in de club. In de club had ik verder nog een roze eenhoorn naar binnen gesmokkeld, maar dat is een ander verhaal... Haha, hier in Finland laten ze best veel toe xD
En de volgende dag was het weer vreemd. Woensdag 29 april 2015. Eigenlijk om 8 uur les, het werd ietsjes later. In de andere les moest ik zijn, dus moest ik maar gaan. Een verplichte les en een presentatie geven, altijd leuk na een avondje stappen! Het ging goed, heel goed gelukkig. De lunch op school was ook lekker, genieten dus. In de middag moest ik toch even bijkomen. Uurtje geslapen tussendoor, daarna vergadering gehad en gewerkt aan school. Inmiddels is mijn kamergenootje zijn spullen aan het inpakken en is voor hem het avontuur bijna afgelopen hier in Finland. Heerlijk stokbrood gezond gemaakt en dan toch maar mijn blog aan het typen na alle activiteiten hier.
Ik wil jullie één ding niet onthouden. Tijdens de presentatie gaf de directeur van Antell een aantal wijze leerlessen. Een daarvan was dat leiderschap net als een roos was. Mooi en wonderschoon van zowel binnen als buiten wanneer het in bloei staat, maar er zitten doorns aan de stengels, wat betekent dat het ook moeilijkheden bezit. Bij de vraag wie er in de toekomst de baas van het bedrijf wilde worden, wist ik nog niet te antwoorden wat ik wil. Ik zie vanzelf wel waar ik naar toe groei denk ik dan.
Voor nu ga ik vaarwel zeggen, anders wordt het mij allemaal te lang. Tot volgende week, van mij zul je komende week geen last hebben :)

Nepal is still shaking of the earthquake, again really shocking news from last week. My tutor student has also a Nepalese nationality and in Oulu are many students from Nepal as well. Everywhere in the city are people collecting money to support the people in Nepal. Beautiful to see!
Like the old Hawaiians always said: "You are not able to see the most beautiful thing in the life, you could only feel them in you heart". Again a beautiful wisdom of Tito which fits with this week.
It's now the 29th of April 2015, that means it is two days after Kingsday in the Netherlands and that means also there is one month left here in the sunny Finland. Could I for now conclude that the time here went very fast in the last 4 months? I know for sure! However, that does mean I have had a lot of fun here in Finland. We are not going to talk about that, we are going to the moment of now, time to go on with last week Thursday.
23rd of April 2015, still reviving from the karaoke bar, the day whereby my brother got the age of 28. I started the morning with the laundry, which has to be done every week. After that, is was time to go to school, having lunch and go back home to recover from the night before. When I woke up, it was time to do much stuff for school, which belongs to the student life. That day was further not that special.
In contrast to Friday, 24th of April 2015. The day started early on Friday, with school in the first few hours of the day. At least the sun raise up every day here at 5 o'clock in the morning, so I wake up for that every morning. It was time for school and after that, having a quick lunch, I went to home and then to the rowing competition. No, not to row by myself, just watching and partying during the rowing. Why I didn't go to row? Of course, it was snowing in Oulu for a few minutes, why not at the end of April. But okay, it was fun and nice, and that's where it is all about. After that, the sun came back again, the weather in Finland is really weird. And then it was just enjoying the sun. Balcony, sewing patches on my overall which keep coming and after that it was time to get crazy. First making hamburgers and then watching the ice hockey game. The principle of ice hockey here is that two best teams of the competition play 7 matches against each other to become the champion of the league. Before the match, it was 3-2 in the advance of Oulun Kärpät, and when they would win, they would be champion. After an exciting game, they lost and they had to finish it last Saturday. Never mind, on Friday night was a great party in a great place!
On Saturday it was time to wake up early again. Saturday, 25th of April 2015, time to go to Ranua. Ranua is a city which is placed a bit more in the north compared with Oulu. In Ranua is a wildlife park, which has the ability of animals have been lonely for a time. On the route, we came across many reindeer on the streets, I think they woke up of there winter sleep... Notable was that it was snowing on the route. Fortunately, when we arrived at the Wildlife Park, the sun was shining and we could enjoy the park very well. There were polar bears, brown bears, raptors, mouses, wolves, reindeer, foxes and some other animals. An important thing for my study mate here in Oulu was a moose. It was a nice day. We drank a beer and went home by bus for a trip of two hours. After that, it was time to watch the final of the final of the ice hockey. First at someone's place, and after that we went downstairs. In normal play time it was an equal game, and so they had to play in overtime. The first one who scored a goal, would win the game. The Finnish people were totally in the game and they couldn't watch it anymore, so they had to drink more. Everyone already left the television (I guess tension), but Oulu scored on that moment the winning goal. It was actually a 17-year old guy, who is also in the national team of Finland. We celebrated it very good, on the Finnish way. After the game, we went to the city to celebrate it all together. It is pretty weird that you could bring your own beer everywhere. In the Netherlands, everything is always organised and the catering industry will deserve some money. But not here. Okay, after the party we ate a slice of pizza and went to the party. I was very happy that they delivered ear plugs, because men. The music was just so loud, but it was awesome. I just don't get the principle that people are doing the 'polonaise' on the music of Hardstyle?!
Sunday, it was time to sleep delicious. Then making eggs and working on school on my way. In the meantime, I was watching football, which is leading to study delay. Then making food, meanwhile other people went to the burger restaurant. Unfortunately, study goes first. When I was finally done, I could go to the sauna and we could watch a movie. Good Sunday, just like every week.
The Monday started again with a shit load of school. Well, a few weeks and then we have a small break. A few meetings and classes, after that working on school and the day is gone. To the supermarket and go on for one hour. About 6 o'clock, we went to the city to celebrate the championship of Oulun Kärpät. Its a big difference of celebrating compared with the Netherlands. That was one of the moments whereby I have a culture shock, crazy. While celebrating, I guess the act before the celebration was the best, after that it was all weird. Also the choices of the music was weird. Normally you have numbers of the championship, but now those were just random Finnish numbers, a bit weird. The most funniest part was that there were everywhere Finnish flags which came from the firework, hanging on parachutes. After the celebration, it was time to drink a coffee, preparing for the next day.
The most important thing of the day was the laundry I guess. No, kidding, at least I started the day with the laundry. After that it was just preparing the presentation which we had for our business plan. Completely prepared we came into the class and the teacher wasn't there. How is it possible? Completely Finnish, but she had more classes in one time. 15 minutes later we were able to do our presentation. It went very well :) Then I went to the supermarket, to my home and then we visited a company, name Antell, whereby the CEO talked about Human Resource Management. Antell is a Finnish company which is spread all over Finland and it is mainly about the bakery. They have also cafes, restaurants etc., but here in Oulu is more like a factory. Completely in style we went to the company. The CEO of the company was there to lead us in the company. Very nice man. The office was also decorated, it was a real family company and you could see that also in the style of the office/meeting room, whatever. There was a cuckoo-clock, old furniture, and all of that was combined with a modern style. We got real delicious strawberry cake and fresh fruit, and of course we got coffee. Nice company, what was mainly about leadership. Then is was time to go back and the party could start. It was afternoon, but we were delicious in the sun. Traditionally, it is Wappu here every year. Wappu is a week which includes not more than just partying. Hereby they organize all kind of crazy party's, all Finnish people are totally in heaven of it. Tuesday, it was time for the students of Engineering. Every year they bring a sauna from the city center to our student building to party here. Amazing tradition. It was a great party, which goes on in the club. Furthermore, I smuggled a pink unicorn, but that is another story... Haha, here in Finland is pretty much allowed xD
And the next day was a little bit weird. Wednesday 29th of April 2015. Actually, I had class at 8 o'clock, but it became a bit later. I had to be in the other class, so I had to go. A compulsory class and to give a presentation, always funny after a night out. It went well, very well happily. The lunch at school was also delicious, enjoyable. In the afternoon I had to recover from the night before. I slept for one hour, after that I had a meeting and worked on school. At the moment, my flatmate is packing his stuff and the adventure almost ended up for him here in Finland. I had some delicious French bread (healthy) and after that I ended up here after my blog typing to all my activities.
I just want to say one thing more. During the presentation, the CEO of Antell gave a few wise lessons of learning. One of them is that leadership is just like a rose. Beautiful and awesome, from the inside and outside as well when it is in bloom, but there are some needles on the stems, which means there are also some difficulties. With the question of wants to be a CEO in the future, I couldn't answer the question. I think I will just see where it ends up.
For now I am going to say farewell, otherwise it is all to long for me. Until next week, you won't have any suffer of me coming week :)
